Wizz Air expenses: meals, hotel and transport reimbursement

Check my flightAbout two minutes · no flight number needed

Quick answer

Whatever the cause of a Wizz Air delay or cancellation, EU261 makes Wizz Air responsible for meals and refreshments while you wait, a hotel and transport when you are kept overnight, and two calls or e-mails. When Wizz Air does not provide them, it must reimburse what you reasonably spent — keep every receipt.

Can Wizz Air passengers claim compensation?

Yes. Wizz Air holds a EU/EEA licence, so Regulation 261 covers its flights departing from the EU/EEA, the UK or Switzerland and its flights into them: €250–€600 per passenger for an arrival delay of 3 hours or more, a cancellation announced under 14 days ahead, or denied boarding — unless the airline proves an extraordinary circumstance.

What happened to your flight?

Wizz Air and expenses during disruption

Wizz Air operates from many secondary airports with contracted ground handlers and provides little on-the-spot welfare: meal vouchers are uncommon and hotels are seldom booked for passengers. Its own guidance is to arrange reasonable meals and accommodation yourself and to claim the costs back. That is a lawful way of meeting Article 9, and the reimbursement obligation is unchanged by the cause of the disruption — an ATC restriction or weather removes the fixed compensation, never the meals and hotel.

Submit expenses through Wizz Air’s claim and refund form under the disrupted-flight section, with itemised receipts and the booking confirmation. Recoverable: meals and refreshments in proportion to the wait, an ordinary hotel for each night away, transfers between airport and hotel, two calls or e-mails. Not recoverable: alcohol, a hotel far above local standards, or a taxi to your final destination when a later flight was offered.

Where Wizz Air offered no re-routing and you bought a replacement flight after asking for one, that cost is an Article 8 re-routing expense rather than Article 9 care — keep your written request.

What Wizz Air must provide while you wait

Article 9 of Regulation 261/2004 (EU261) sets the duty of care. For a cancellation or denied boarding it applies immediately; for a delay it starts at 2 hours on flights up to 1,500 km, 3 hours between 1,500 and 3,500 km (and on all intra-EU flights over 1,500 km), and 4 hours on longer flights. Wizz Air must offer meals and refreshments in reasonable relation to the waiting time, two telephone calls or e-mails, and — when a stay of one or more nights becomes necessary — a hotel and transport between the airport and the hotel.

When Wizz Air does not provide it

The Court of Justice held in McDonagh that the duty of care has no time or money limit and that passengers who had to pay for their own care are entitled to be reimbursed for expenses that were necessary, appropriate and reasonable. Reasonable means an ordinary meal, a standard hotel near the airport, a taxi to that hotel — not alcohol, a five-star suite or a rental car home when a later flight was on offer.

Care does not depend on the cause

Unlike the fixed compensation, care is owed whatever caused the disruption: weather, an ATC strike or an airport closure removes the compensation but leaves the meals and hotel untouched. Wizz Air cannot answer an expenses claim with “extraordinary circumstances”.

How to claim expenses from Wizz Air

  1. Keep itemised receipts (not card slips) for meals, hotel, transport and calls, with dates.
  2. Submit them through Wizz Air’s official channel (https://wizzair.com/en-gb/information-and-services/travel-information/compensation-and-refunds), one claim per booking, with the flight, the delay or cancellation and the total per receipt.
  3. Claim expenses separately from compensation: they are two rights and Wizz Air can owe both.
  4. After a refusal or 8 weeks of silence, escalate to AviationADR (UK flights); small claims for expenses are common and simple.

Frequently asked questions

Does Wizz Air have to pay for my hotel?

Yes, when a delay or cancellation keeps you overnight — either by booking it or by reimbursing a reasonable hotel you booked. Transport to and from the hotel is included.

Can I claim expenses from Wizz Air and compensation?

Yes. Expenses (Article 9) and the fixed compensation (Article 7) are separate rights. Extraordinary circumstances can remove the compensation but never the expenses.

Wizz Air offered no hotel — can I claim mine?

Yes. Book a reasonable room, keep the receipt and submit it through Wizz Air's claim form. Article 9 care is owed for every cancellation, whatever the cause.

Does Wizz Air pay expenses for a strike cancellation?

Yes. Strikes and other extraordinary circumstances only affect the fixed compensation; meals, hotel and transfers remain due.

Can I claim a replacement flight from Wizz Air?

Under Article 8, when Wizz Air offered no re-routing at the earliest opportunity and you asked for one first. Otherwise the refund of the cancelled sector is what is owed.
