Amsterdam Schiphol flight compensation

Quick answer

Every departure from Amsterdam Schiphol is covered by Regulation 261/2004; inbound flights from outside the EU are covered on EU airlines such as KLM. Schiphol's runway and staffing capacity limits are the most common defence; when the airport itself imposes a restriction the cause may be extraordinary, but KLM's own crew or fleet issues are not. The Dutch limitation period is only 2 years.

Care and re-routing when leaving Amsterdam

Delayed at the gate: meals, refreshments and two calls or e-mails from 2 h of delay on flights up to 1,500 km, 3 h up to 3,500 km (and on every intra-EU flight over 1,500 km), 4 h beyond — plus a hotel and transport when the departure moves to the next day. Owed whatever the cause.

Cancelled or denied boarding: the choice between a refund of the unused ticket within 7 days and re-routing to your destination at the earliest opportunity or on a later date of your choosing, with care while you wait.

Delayed 5 h or more: you may give up the journey and take a full refund of the unused ticket, with a return flight to your departure point if the trip has lost its purpose.

Schiphol operates under a capped number of annual aircraft movements and uses runways in combinations dictated by wind and noise rules, so the airport itself — not the airline — imposes many of the restrictions KLM cites. A restriction imposed by the airport or by air-traffic control can be extraordinary; KLM ground handling, crew and fleet shortages are not.

Enforcement body

Human Environment and Transport Inspectorate (ILT)

No aviation ADR scheme for standalone flights (the Geschillencommissie Luchtvaart no longer exists; Reizen excludes standalone flights). After the airline: the ILT complaint form (flights under one year old) and the kantonrechter.

Can I claim compensation for a flight from Amsterdam?

EU261 applies to every airline on this route: €250–€600 per passenger for an arrival delay of 3 hours or more, a cancellation announced under 14 days ahead, or denied boarding, unless the airline proves an extraordinary circumstance. Refund, re-routing and care are due whatever the cause.

Schiphol-specific issues

Schiphol has imposed passenger caps and slot reductions in recent years because of security-staff shortages, and its runway use is restricted in strong winds. Airlines treat both as extraordinary; the test is whether the restriction was external to the airline and actually affected your flight. KLM’s own ground-handling and crew shortages are not extraordinary.

KLM’s hub operation means many claims involve connections: a delayed European feeder that causes a missed intercontinental flight on the same booking is compensated on the distance to the final destination (for example Dublin–Amsterdam–Singapore: €600, or €300 if the arrival delay is between 3 and 4 hours).

Airlines at Schiphol

KLM and KLM Cityhopper, Transavia, easyJet Europe, Delta (US carrier — inbound flights not covered), Air France, British Airways, Vueling, TUI fly Netherlands.

Escalation for Schiphol flights

  1. Claim from the airline in writing.
  2. ILT (Human Environment and Transport Inspectorate) — enforcement complaints for flights less than one year old; it can act against airlines but does not award compensation. There is no Dutch aviation dispute-resolution scheme for standalone flights: the former Geschillencommissie Luchtvaart no longer exists.
  3. Kantonrechter small-claims court — within 2 years of the flight.
