British Airways refund: cancelled and long-delayed flights
Check my flightAbout two minutes · no flight number needed
Quick answer
When British Airways cancels your flight, or delays it by 5 hours or more and you decide not to travel, UK261 gives you a full refund of the unused ticket within 7 days, paid in money — a voucher only if you agree. The refund is separate from compensation: you can have both, and a refund is due even when the cause was extraordinary.
Operating carrier
British Airways BA / BAW · United Kingdom
UK-licensed carrier — UK261 applies to its flights departing from the UK and to its flights into the UK. EU261 applies to its flights departing from the EU.

Can British Airways passengers claim compensation?
Yes. British Airways holds a UK licence, so Regulation 261 covers its flights departing from the EU/EEA, the UK or Switzerland and its flights into them: £220–£520 per passenger for an arrival delay of 3 hours or more, a cancellation announced under 14 days ahead, or denied boarding — unless the airline proves an extraordinary circumstance.

A few short questions — no flight number needed yet. You get a preliminary result on the facts you give; the full check confirms it from the itinerary.

British Airways refunds: cash, vouchers and Avios
British Airways processes refunds through Manage My Booking, where a cancelled flight shows a “refund” option alongside rebooking. BA also markets a Future Travel Voucher during disruption; it is a commercial alternative you may decline, and Article 7(3) entitles you to a cash refund within seven days to the original form of payment. If the voucher option appears first, keep looking for the refund path or call BA and ask for it in money.
BA sells return tickets as one contract, so when the outbound is cancelled you can have the whole unused journey refunded, or take re-routing and keep the return. A cancellation of the return alone refunds that leg. Tickets bought with Avios are refunded as Avios plus the taxes and fees; BA Holidays packages are governed by the Package Travel Regulations as well as Regulation 261 and are refunded by BA Holidays as the organiser.
Tickets bought through an agent are refunded via the agent, though BA can be asked to confirm the refund was issued. Where BA offered a re-routing you accepted and then arrived more than three hours late, the refund route is closed but compensation may still be due.
When British Airways owes a refund
Article 8 of Regulation 261/2004 (UK261) gives you a refund in three situations: British Airways cancelled the flight; British Airways delayed it by 5 hours or more and you chose not to travel; or you were denied boarding. The refund covers the full cost of the ticket for the parts of the journey not made — and for the parts already made, if the flight no longer serves any purpose in relation to your original travel plan — plus, when relevant, a return flight to your first point of departure at the earliest opportunity.
Refund or re-routing: your choice, not British Airways’s
When British Airways cancels, it must offer you the choice between the refund and re-routing to your final destination under comparable conditions, at the earliest opportunity or on a later date that suits you. Accepting a rebooking in the app counts as choosing re-routing; if you want the money, choose the refund option or say so in writing. While you wait for re-routing, British Airways owes meals and, if needed, a hotel.
Money, not vouchers
The refund must be paid within 7 days in cash, by bank transfer or to the card used, unless you sign for a voucher or travel credit (Article 7(3)). You can decline any voucher British Airways offers, however generous it looks, and you can reject one you accepted only if you were not told a cash refund was available.
Refund and compensation are different rights
The refund returns what you paid; the £220, £350 or £520 compensation pays for the disruption. A cancellation announced less than 14 days ahead gives you both, unless British Airways proves extraordinary circumstances — and even then the refund stands, because Article 8 has no extraordinary-circumstances exemption.
How to request a refund from British Airways
- Use the refund option in the cancellation notice or through British Airways’s official channel (https://www.britishairways.com/en-gb/information/delayed-or-cancelled-flights/compensation), quoting the booking reference and the passengers.
- State that you want the refund to the original payment method, not a voucher.
- If nothing arrives within 7 days, write again with the date of the request; after a refusal or silence, escalate to CEDR.
Frequently asked questions
How long does British Airways have to refund a cancelled flight?
Seven days from your request, in money to the original payment method. A voucher is only valid if you agreed to it in writing.
Can I get a refund from British Airways for a long delay?
Yes, from 5 hours of delay, if you decide not to travel: British Airways must refund the unused ticket and, if you are mid-journey, fly you back to your departure point.
Can I refuse BA's Future Travel Voucher?
Yes. A voucher needs your agreement; without it BA must refund in cash to the original payment method within seven days of the cancellation.
How are Avios bookings refunded by British Airways?
The Avios are returned to your account and the taxes, fees and carrier charges are refunded in money. Redemption bookings have the same Regulation 261 rights as paid tickets.
I booked a BA Holidays package — who refunds me?
BA Holidays as the package organiser, under the Package Travel Regulations. Regulation 261 compensation for the flight is claimed from British Airways as the operating carrier.
