Eurowings is the Lufthansa Group's point-to-point airline. Eurowings GmbH holds a German licence and Eurowings Europe a Maltese one; both are EU carriers, so Regulation 261/2004 covers every Eurowings departure from the EU/EEA and every Eurowings arrival into the EU. Most of its network is under 1,500 km (€250); Canary Islands and Egypt routes pay €400.

Les passagers Eurowings peuvent-ils réclamer une indemnisation ?

Oui.

Which Eurowings flew you

Two airlines fly under the EW code: Eurowings GmbH (German operating licence, bases in Düsseldorf, Cologne, Hamburg, Stuttgart and Berlin) and Eurowings Europe (Maltese licence, aircraft based in Austria and elsewhere). Both are EU carriers, so it makes no difference to your rights which one operated. Eurowings Discover (4Y) is a separate Lufthansa Group long-haul airline with its own claims process.

How to claim from Eurowings

Eurowings takes claims through the passenger rights page of eurowings.com, which leads to a compensation form; you need the booking code and surname. Submit one claim per booking listing every passenger, quote the flight number, date and arrival delay, and ask for payment to a bank account. Eurowings, like the rest of the Lufthansa Group, replies in writing; a first refusal is worth a reasoned second letter.

What Eurowings typically argues

  • Late inbound aircraft / rotation delays — Eurowings runs tight multi-sector rotations from its German bases; a morning delay cascades through the day. Compensable unless the original cause was extraordinary.
  • ATC and airport restrictions — frequent in summer at Palma, the Greek islands and in German airspace; extraordinary only if shown for your flight.
  • Crew shortages and strikes by Eurowings’ own staff — not extraordinary (Krüsemann).
  • Technical problems — not extraordinary (Wallentin-Hermann).

Escalation

  • Schlichtungsstelle Reise & Verkehr (formerly söp) in Berlin offers free conciliation for flights departing Germany or operated by a German carrier; Eurowings takes part. Refer the case after a refusal or 2 months without a substantive reply.
  • Luftfahrt-Bundesamt (LBA) is the German enforcement body; it can fine the airline but does not order payment.
  • Court: the Amtsgericht at the departure or arrival airport, or the European Small Claims Procedure. Limitation in Germany: three years from the end of the year of the flight (§§ 195, 199 BGB).

Typical amounts

Düsseldorf–Palma, Stuttgart–Palma, Cologne–Berlin, Düsseldorf–London and most of the network are under 1,500 km (€250). Hamburg–Fuerteventura, Düsseldorf–Gran Canaria and the Egypt routes pay €400 as intra-EU flights over 1,500 km (or under 3,500 km to Egypt).

Can I claim compensation from Eurowings?

Yes, if your Eurowings flight arrived three hours or more late, was cancelled with less than 14 days' notice, or you were denied boarding against your will — and the airline cannot prove an extraordinary circumstance. EU261 applies because of the airline's licence and where the flight departed.

Conditions
  • Arrival at the final destination three hours or more after the scheduled time (delay).
  • Cancellation announced less than 14 days before departure, and no re-routing inside the legal time windows.
  • Confirmed booking, on-time check-in and boarding refused against your will.
  • The airline cannot prove an extraordinary circumstance it could not have avoided with all reasonable measures.

How much compensation does Eurowings pay?

On the example routes for Eurowings the fixed amount is 250 to 400 EUR per passenger, set by distance, regardless of the ticket price.

Conditions
  • Up to 1,500 km · 1,500–3,500 km · over 3,500 km; intra-EU flights over 3,500 km take the middle amount.
  • Over 3,500 km the airline may halve the amount if the arrival delay was under four hours.
  • Per passenger, for every passenger on the booking.

Which law applies to a Eurowings flight?

Regulation (EC) No 261/2004 (EU261): Eurowings is an EU/EEA-licensed carrier, so it applies to every flight departing the EU/EEA and to its flights into the EU/EEA from outside.

Conditions
  • Any flight departing the regime's territory is covered whichever airline operates it.
  • A flight into the territory from outside is covered only when a licensed carrier of that regime (or the EU) operates it.

How long do I have to claim against Eurowings?

For flights departing DE, a court claim is likely time-barred after 36 months (§§ 195, 199 BGB (three years from the end of the year in which the flight took place)). Other departure countries have their own limits; the airline's own claim form has no deadline of its own.

Conditions
  • The country whose enforcement body is competent — normally the departure country — sets the limit.
  • Limitation is national law (CJEU C-139/11); escalation steps do not stop the clock.

Where do I send a claim to Eurowings?

Through the claim channel of Eurowings: https://www.eurowings.com/en/information/passenger-rights.html. Claim from the operating carrier, in writing, and keep proof of sending.

Conditions
  • Claim from the airline that operated the flight (on the boarding pass), not necessarily the one that sold the ticket.
  • In writing, with the booking reference, flight number, date and the passengers' names; keep proof of sending.

What if Eurowings refuses to pay?

Eurowings is a member of Schlichtungsstelle Reise & Verkehr (formerly söp), whose decisions are not binding on the airline. Refer the case there after a refusal or once the waiting period has passed; the enforcement body and the courts remain available.

Conditions
  • The body accepts the case 60 days after the claim was sent without a substantive answer, or after a final refusal.
  • The national enforcement body of the departure country can examine the airline's compliance.
  • A court claim remains available within the national time limit, as a last resort.

What if Eurowings says the delay was due to weather?

Weather can be an extraordinary circumstance — but only on the facts. Eurowings must prove the conditions were incompatible with operating this flight, that they affected this flight and not just the airport in general, and that no reasonable measure could have avoided the delay. A generic reference to weather does not discharge that burden.

Conditions
  • The burden of proof is on the airline (Art. 5(3)).
  • The weather must have affected this flight, not just the airport in general; other flights that operated are evidence.
  • The airline must also show what it did to avoid the disruption — spare aircraft, crew, re-routing.
  • A technical fault, by contrast, is inherent in normal operations and not extraordinary.

Questions fréquentes

My flight was operated by Eurowings Europe, not Eurowings GmbH. Does it matter?

No. Both are EU carriers (Germany and Malta), so EU261 applies identically. Claim through the Eurowings passenger-rights form; the group handles claims for both.

Is the Schlichtungsstelle Reise & Verkehr binding on Eurowings?

The conciliation body (formerly söp) issues a conciliation proposal that both sides can accept; Eurowings participates in the scheme and generally follows the outcome. The Amtsgericht small-claims route remains open within the three-year German limitation period.

Are Eurowings Discover flights covered by this page?

Eurowings Discover is a separate Lufthansa Group long-haul airline with its own claims process. Your rights are the same (it is a German carrier), but address the claim to Eurowings Discover.
