Ryanair DAC is licensed in Ireland, so Regulation 261/2004 covers all Ryanair flights departing from the EU/EEA and all Ryanair flights into the EU/EEA; UK261 covers Ryanair UK departures. Because most Ryanair routes are under 1,500 km, the typical amount is €250 (£220) per passenger, rising to €400 (£350) on longer routes such as Dublin–Canary Islands.

Les passagers Ryanair peuvent-ils réclamer une indemnisation ?

Oui.

Which Ryanair entity flew you

The Ryanair Group operates flights under the FR flight-number prefix through several licensed airlines: Ryanair DAC (Ireland), Ryanair UK (UK licence, for flights out of the UK to non-EU destinations), Malta Air (Malta), Buzz (Poland) and Lauda Europe (Malta). All of them are EU or UK carriers, so the regime depends only on where your flight departed: EU261 for EU/EEA departures, UK261 for UK departures. The entity name appears on your booking confirmation and boarding pass.

How to claim from Ryanair

Ryanair only accepts EU261 claims through its own online form, reachable from the help centre (“EU261 compensation”). Submit one claim per booking listing every passenger, attach the booking confirmation, and keep the case number. Ryanair states it answers within a few weeks; in practice initial rejections that cite “extraordinary circumstances” are common for weather and ATC events, and Ryanair does pay for technical, crew and rotation delays once challenged with the correct legal basis.

Ryanair does not accept claims sent through claim-management companies without a power of attorney — claiming yourself is the fastest route.

What Ryanair typically argues

  • Air traffic control — Ryanair frequently cites ATC staffing or strikes, particularly in France. ATC restrictions are usually extraordinary, but the airline must show they affected your flight and that it could not reschedule; ask for the specific ATC regulation reference.
  • Rotation / late inbound aircraft — only extraordinary if the original cause on the earlier sector was extraordinary. Ask for the root cause.
  • Technical problems — not extraordinary under settled case law (Wallentin-Hermann, van der Lans).

Escalation

  • Flights departing the UK: Ryanair is a member of AviationADR, whose decisions bind the airline. Use it after a refusal or 8 weeks of silence.
  • Flights departing Ireland: complain to the Irish Aviation Authority, Ireland’s enforcement body.
  • Flights departing other EU countries: the enforcement body of the departure country (for example the LBA in Germany, AESA in Spain, ENAC in Italy).
  • Court: small-claims procedures in the departure country or, for Irish flights, the Irish courts. Ireland’s limitation period is 6 years; other countries are shorter.

Amounts on typical Ryanair routes

Most Ryanair sectors are short-haul, so €250 (£220 from the UK) is the standard amount. Routes over 1,500 km — Dublin to the Canary Islands, London Stansted to Marrakesh or Tenerife, Warsaw to Lisbon — pay €400 (£350). The few Ryanair routes over 3,500 km that leave the EU or the UK — London Stansted to Tel Aviv, about 3,560 km, when operated — sit in the €600 / £520 band. The examples above are computed from airport coordinates.

Can I claim compensation from Ryanair?

Yes, if your Ryanair flight arrived three hours or more late, was cancelled with less than 14 days' notice, or you were denied boarding against your will — and the airline cannot prove an extraordinary circumstance. EU261 applies because of the airline's licence and where the flight departed.

Conditions
  • Arrival at the final destination three hours or more after the scheduled time (delay).
  • Cancellation announced less than 14 days before departure, and no re-routing inside the legal time windows.
  • Confirmed booking, on-time check-in and boarding refused against your will.
  • The airline cannot prove an extraordinary circumstance it could not have avoided with all reasonable measures.

How much compensation does Ryanair pay?

On the example routes for Ryanair the fixed amount is 250 to 400 EUR per passenger, set by distance, regardless of the ticket price.

Conditions
  • Up to 1,500 km · 1,500–3,500 km · over 3,500 km; intra-EU flights over 3,500 km take the middle amount.
  • Over 3,500 km the airline may halve the amount if the arrival delay was under four hours.
  • Per passenger, for every passenger on the booking.

Which law applies to a Ryanair flight?

Regulation (EC) No 261/2004 (EU261): Ryanair is an EU/EEA-licensed carrier, so it applies to every flight departing the EU/EEA and to its flights into the EU/EEA from outside.

Conditions
  • Any flight departing the regime's territory is covered whichever airline operates it.
  • A flight into the territory from outside is covered only when a licensed carrier of that regime (or the EU) operates it.

How long do I have to claim against Ryanair?

For flights departing IE, a court claim is likely time-barred after 72 months (Statute of Limitations 1957, s. 11 (six years, simple contract)). Other departure countries have their own limits; the airline's own claim form has no deadline of its own.

Conditions
  • The country whose enforcement body is competent — normally the departure country — sets the limit.
  • Limitation is national law (CJEU C-139/11); escalation steps do not stop the clock.

Where do I send a claim to Ryanair?

Through the claim channel of Ryanair: https://help.ryanair.com/hc/en-gb. Claim from the operating carrier, in writing, and keep proof of sending.

Conditions
  • Claim from the airline that operated the flight (on the boarding pass), not necessarily the one that sold the ticket.
  • In writing, with the booking reference, flight number, date and the passengers' names; keep proof of sending.

What if Ryanair refuses to pay?

No ADR scheme is on file for Ryanair. After a refusal, complain to Irish Aviation Authority (IAA) — the enforcement body of the departure country decides; a court claim remains available within the time limit.

Conditions
  • No fixed waiting period is published for this body; check its admissibility rules.
  • The national enforcement body of the departure country can examine the airline's compliance.
  • A court claim remains available within the national time limit, as a last resort.

What if Ryanair says the delay was due to weather?

Weather can be an extraordinary circumstance — but only on the facts. Ryanair must prove the conditions were incompatible with operating this flight, that they affected this flight and not just the airport in general, and that no reasonable measure could have avoided the delay. A generic reference to weather does not discharge that burden.

Conditions
  • The burden of proof is on the airline (Art. 5(3)).
  • The weather must have affected this flight, not just the airport in general; other flights that operated are evidence.
  • The airline must also show what it did to avoid the disruption — spare aircraft, crew, re-routing.
  • A technical fault, by contrast, is inherent in normal operations and not extraordinary.

Questions fréquentes

Does Ryanair pay EU261 compensation?

Yes. Ryanair is an Irish airline, so EU261 covers every Ryanair departure and its flights into the EU. Compensation is €250 or €400 per passenger on Ryanair routes (£220 or £350 under UK261 for Ryanair UK departures) when a delay of 3+ hours, a short-notice cancellation or denied boarding is not caused by extraordinary circumstances.

How do I claim compensation from Ryanair?

Use Ryanair's EU261 claim form in its help centre, one claim per booking listing all passengers, with the booking reference and the reason Ryanair gave. Keep the confirmation. If Ryanair refuses or does not reply within 8 weeks, escalate to AviationADR for UK flights or the Irish Aviation Authority for others.

Which rules apply if my Ryanair flight was operated by Malta Air or Buzz?

Departures from the EU or UK are covered whatever the operating entity. For flights into the EU from a non-EU country, the operating carrier must be EU-licensed: Malta Air, Buzz and Lauda Europe are, Ryanair UK is not.

Can Ryanair pay me in vouchers?

Only with your written agreement. Under Article 7(3) compensation and refunds are paid in cash, by bank transfer or card. You can decline a voucher and insist on money.
