Réponse rapide
If your Ryanair flight reached its final destination 3 hours or more after the scheduled arrival time, EU261 compensation of €250, €400 or €600 per passenger (by distance) is due unless Ryanair proves extraordinary circumstances. The departure delay does not matter — the arrival time, measured when the doors open, does. Below 3 hours you still have care rights.

Ryanair delays: what is specific
Ryanair flies point-to-point and does not sell connections, so the only delay that matters is the arrival delay of the flight on your booking — there is no “final destination” further down the line. Ryanair’s high aircraft utilisation means a morning delay often cascades through the day’s rotations; a knock-on delay is compensable unless Ryanair proves the first cause was extraordinary and that it could not have used a spare aircraft or crew.
Your flight may carry a Ryanair (FR) number but be operated by Ryanair UK, Malta Air, Buzz or Lauda Europe. That changes the licensing state, not your rights on departures from the EU or UK; for flights into the EU from outside it, the operating carrier must be EU-licensed for EU261 to apply. Ryanair asks passengers to claim through its own EU261 form and may ask you to verify your identity; keep the booking reference and the e-mail address used for the booking to hand.
Expect Ryanair to cite air-traffic-control restrictions or weather. Both can be extraordinary, but only for the specific flight: ask which restriction applied, at what time, and whether other departures operated.
How the 3 hours are measured on Ryanair flights
The delay that counts is the arrival delay at your final destination, measured when at least one aircraft door opens — not the departure delay, the touchdown time or the block-on time. Compare it with the scheduled arrival on your booking. A Ryanair flight that leaves 3 hours 30 late but makes up time to arrive 2 hours 50 late is not compensable; one that leaves on time and arrives 3 hours late is.
Ryanair DAC (Irish AOC). Flights may also be operated by Ryanair UK (RK), Malta Air (AL), Buzz (RR) or Lauda Europe (LW) under the FR flight number. Check the operating carrier on your boarding pass: the rules follow the airline that flew the aircraft, not the one that sold the ticket.
How much Ryanair owes for a delay
Under EU261 the amount depends only on the great-circle distance of the flight (or of the whole journey on a single booking), never on the ticket price: €250, €400 or €600 per passenger. On flights over 3,500 km Ryanair may halve the amount (€300 instead of €600) when the arrival delay is between 3 and 4 hours; from 4 hours the full amount applies. The table above shows the amounts on Ryanair’s typical routes.
Care while you wait
From 2 hours of delay (short flights), 3 hours (medium) or 4 hours (long) Ryanair must offer meals and refreshments in proportion to the wait, two phone calls or e-mails, and a hotel with transport if you are kept overnight. If it does not, keep receipts for reasonable expenses and claim them separately — they come on top of the fixed compensation. After 5 hours you may also abandon the trip and claim a full refund of the unused ticket.
What Ryanair may argue
Only extraordinary circumstances exempt Ryanair from paying: severe weather, air-traffic-control restrictions or strikes, security incidents, bird strikes, external strikes. Technical faults, crew shortages, late inbound aircraft from an earlier rotation and Ryanair’s own staff strikes are not extraordinary. The burden of proof is on Ryanair: ask for the precise cause of your flight’s delay and the measures it took, and treat a bare “operational reasons” as no answer.
How to claim a delay from Ryanair
- Note the actual arrival time (arrivals board, flight-tracker screenshot, Ryanair’s own notification).
- Ask Ryanair in writing for the reason for the delay.
- Submit the claim through Ryanair’s official channel (https://help.ryanair.com/hc/en-gb), or by post to Ryanair DAC, Customer Service Department, PO Box 11451, Swords, Co. Dublin, Ireland, quoting the booking reference, the flight, the date, the arrival delay and the amount per passenger.
- If Ryanair refuses or does not reply within 8 weeks, escalate to AviationADR (UK flights); a court claim remains available within the limitation period of the departure country.
Questions et réponses
How long does a Ryanair flight have to be delayed for compensation?
Three hours or more at arrival, measured when a door opens at the destination and compared with the scheduled arrival on the itinerary. The departure delay does not count: a Ryanair flight that leaves 3 h 20 late and arrives 2 h 50 late earns nothing, one that leaves 2 h 40 late and arrives 3 h 05 late earns the full amount.
- Conditions
- Arrival delay ≥ 3 hours at the destination airport
- Departure from the EU/EEA or the UK, or an inbound flight from outside Europe (all Ryanair entities are covered carriers)
- Exceptions
- Ryanair proves an extraordinary circumstance for the flight and that it could not have been avoided
- Below 3 hours: care from 2 hours (meals, refreshments), no fixed compensation
- Exemple
Stansted–Dublin scheduled to land 21:05, doors open 00:12: 3 h 07 late, £220 per passenger.

How much does Ryanair pay for a delayed flight?
A fixed amount per passenger set by the distance of the flight, never by the fare: €250 up to 1,500 km and €400 between 1,500 and 3,500 km on departures from the EU, £220 and £350 on departures from the UK. Almost every Ryanair sector falls in the first band; Dublin–Canary Islands, Stansted–Málaga or Tenerife and Warsaw–Lisbon fall in the second.
- Conditions
- Great-circle distance between the two airports
- Paid per passenger, including children with a seat
- Exceptions
- Routes over 3,500 km leaving the EU or UK (Stansted–Tel Aviv, about 3,560 km, when operated): €600 / £520, halved when the arrival delay is under 4 hours
- Exemple
A family of four on a Dublin–Gran Canaria flight (2,932 km) delayed 4 hours: 4 × €400 = €1,600.

What if Ryanair rejects the delay claim?
Reply once in writing asking for the specific cause, the time it applied, whether other flights operated and the measures Ryanair took, with a 14-day deadline. If the answer does not change, refer the case for free: AviationADR for departures from the UK (its decisions bind Ryanair), the Irish Aviation Authority for Irish departures, or the enforcement body of the departure country. A small claim in the departure country remains available within its limitation period.
- Conditions
- Keep the case number, the refusal and your reply with dates
- AviationADR opens a case after the final answer or 8 weeks of silence
- Exceptions
- A refusal can be right: an arrival delay under 3 hours, or a genuine ATC restriction that held your flight with no re-routing available
- Exemple
A refusal for “operational reasons” on a Bergamo–Stansted flight delayed 3 h 30 names no extraordinary circumstance; the reply asks which one, and the case goes to AviationADR.

Questions fréquentes
How much does Ryanair pay for a 3-hour delay?
€250 per passenger on flights up to 1,500 km, €400 between 1,500 and 3,500 km and €600 beyond 3,500 km — the same fixed amounts as any airline under EU261. On long-haul flights Ryanair may pay €300 when the arrival delay is under 4 hours.
Does Ryanair pay compensation for a 2-hour delay?
No fixed compensation is due below 3 hours of arrival delay. From 2 hours (short flights) Ryanair still owes care: meals, refreshments and communication, and a hotel if the wait runs overnight. Keep receipts if it does not provide them.
Is a delay caused by a late inbound aircraft compensable on Ryanair?
Usually yes. A knock-on delay from an earlier rotation is only exempt if Ryanair proves the original cause was extraordinary and that it could not have avoided the delay with reasonable measures such as a spare aircraft or crew.
How long do I have to claim a Ryanair delay?
It depends on the country of departure, not on Ryanair: typically between 1 and 6 years (for example 6 years in the UK and Ireland, 5 in France and Spain, 3 in Germany, 2 in the Netherlands). Check the country page for your departure airport.
Does Ryanair pay compensation for a delay?
Yes, when the flight arrives at its destination 3 hours or more late and Ryanair cannot prove an extraordinary circumstance: €250 per passenger on routes up to 1,500 km (£220 from the UK), €400 (£350) on longer routes. Ryanair pays by bank transfer or to the booking card; Wallet credit is optional.
How do I claim delay compensation from Ryanair?
Through the EU261 compensation form in Ryanair's help centre: one claim per booking with every passenger, the booking reference, the arrival delay and the amount per passenger. Keep the case number; if Ryanair refuses or does not answer within 8 weeks, escalate to AviationADR (UK departures), the Irish Aviation Authority (Irish departures) or the enforcement body of the departure country.
Ryanair says my delay was caused by air traffic control — is that extraordinary?
It can be, for the flights an ATC restriction actually held. Ryanair must show the restriction applied to your flight at the relevant time and that it could not retime or re-route; ask for the ATC regulation reference and check whether other flights on the route operated. A restriction earlier in the day that delayed the inbound aircraft is judged on that original cause.
My Ryanair flight was operated by Malta Air or Buzz — who do I claim from?
Ryanair, through the same EU261 form, naming the operating entity from your boarding pass. Malta Air, Buzz, Lauda Europe and Ryanair UK are all EU or UK carriers, so the regime and the amount follow the departure airport and do not change.
